Jason Hill was born and raised in Charlotte, N.C. He comes from a baseball family that remains committed to the Charlotte Baseball Community. Jason’s father, Garry Hill, was a standout for the State Champion Garinger Wildcats, as well as the World Series Champion American Legion Post 9 team in 1965. He attended UNC Chapel Hill, before becoming the Atlanta Braves 1st Round Draft Pick (3rd pick overall) in 1967. Jason’s uncles, Eddie Hill and Billy Prophet also played at high levels. Eddie and Billy also played for Garinger HS and while Eddie followed Garry to UNC, where he was named ACC Player of the Year, Billy went on to become a standout for the Clemson Tigers. Eddie also played professionally in the Cincinnati Reds organization. Jason attended West Charlotte High School, where he became the second player in school history to be offered a Division I baseball scholarship. He went on to have a successful career at UNC Charlotte where he was recognized as a 3-time All-Conference USA selection, Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week, 1998 NCAA Central Regional Participant, and 1999 Team MVP. He finished his career in the top five in nearly every offensive category. Jason graduated with a BA in English in 1999 and immediately began his coaching career as an assistant coach for Loren Hibbs at UNC Charlotte, while teaching freshman seminar courses and serving as an Athletic Academic Counselor. He received a Master’s Degree in English Education from UNC Charlotte in 2002. He resigned his position at UNC Charlotte after the 2002 season, but continued teaching at the high school level. After his first year of teaching at Northwest Cabarrus, Jason was selected as a Cabarrus County Schools First Class Teacher of the Year Finalist and was awarded the Cabarrus County Schools First Year High School Teacher of the Year Award.
In 2003, Mike Shildt asked Jason to take over the head coaching position with the 18U On Deck O’s. Like the 2002 O’s, Jason’s 2003 O’s team again surpassed expectations by winning 5 different State and Regional Tournaments and finished 3rd overall out of an 85 team field consisting of the best teams in the country at the Perfect Game/Baseball America/WWBC in Jupiter, Florida. Most importantly, once again every senior on the roster was offered a college scholarship. Jason Hill is currently the Director of On Deck Baseball & Softball Academy, where, along with his family, Jason continues the tradition of excellence in helping to develop players from the greater-Charlotte area.
During his four years at UNC Charlotte, he had the great pleasure of being teammates with his brother, Kevin Hill. He also treasured the opportunity to join the 49ers coaching staff while his youngest brother, Travis Hill, played for Charlotte. During his own playing career, Jason met Janine (Repole) Hill from Somerville, New Jersey. Janine was a softball standout for the 49ers. The couple married in July of 2000, and currently resides in Pineville with their five children, Matthew, Emily, Sydney, Michael and Louis.
